I know of a couple who are going green and want to install solar panels and/or windturbines in their home. Are there solar grants out there for individuals? The costs are near $20,000 if they’re going to pay for them themselves.

I'm no expert, but, I saw both in B&Q. I think the wind turbine was apprx 2000 quid, looked about 8 ft tall-ish.

B+Q have wind turbines and solar panels which are quite cheap, but they are cheap for a reason. Worcester Bosch (amongst others) have greenskies solar panels, an average house is £3000 +, wind turbines I don't know enough about to comment, except to say it wouldn't be above 5k in my opinion. The initial layout is lost, you do this as much to be environmentally conscious as for money saving reasons, there is half a chance that by the time you have saved the initial cost, you will be at least part way to replacement of parts or whole system. Also, the solar system has to be serviced annually, this will cost. Your roof position is better facing a certain direction for solar, but some unfavourable conditions can be adapted to. You may also like to know about ground source heat pumps, these too can be found on the Worcester Bosch website. Looking back through this, it sounds like I am trying to put you off! Not at all, I am all for it, but i like to make people aware of all the pro's and con's. One more thing, don't let anybody tell you that solar saves any massive amount on your bills, the likelihood is that you will save around 30% of your hot water costs, NOT your total heating or energy bills. Good hunting!
