A local man recently died, leaving behind a 5.5 acre apple orchard. His three sons want to keep it but don’t have the funds to take it over and maintain it. Using a farm grant to help ‘purchase’ the land and then maintain it would enable them to continue their father’s legacy. Starting with community conservation groups, they’ll find different kinds of grants that they will qualify for.

Check with your local farm bureau and community development groups.

You might try making it a childrens attraction -kids come and pick apples for themselves and learn about how to grow fruit, how to make apple cider and what fresh apple cider tastes like. You could even have a petting zoo! Charge a reasonable amount and that would help.
Or rent the property to a near neighbor to use so you make money and keep the property.

If you can show there is some historical or local cultural value to it - you might be able to make it an irrevocable land trust. I don't remember all the information about land trusts, but you should be able to do an internet search to find out.
