I know of a couple who are going green and want to install solar panels and/or windturbines in their home. Are there solar grants out there for individuals? The costs are near $20,000 if they’re going to pay for them themselves.

I suggest you explore all federal funding and grant options at the Federal Student Aid website http://federalstudentaid.ed.gov/ and there also a Handbook of the Pell Grant, an 86 page document that contains everything about the grant. You can also call the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-433-3243 and ask them if there are any programs for you.
My friend lives in Maine and wants to start an organic farm. She’s hoping to find a farm grant that will help her get started utilizing greenhouses. She’s been looking for grants online but keeps running into a lot of red tape.

Household electricity is going up 25%. Where we use about half the kilowatt hours than we did last year, we’re still paying about the same each bill, so looking into alternative energy sources just makes sense. Solar panels can be very expensive, as are even small windmills. However, there are grants available, including solar grants, to help build onto houses to increase efficiency and reduce energy costs. Some of these grants will cover the costs of the material, other will help cover the costs of installation.
