Purpose and Activities

The focus of the foundation is aiding the hungry, the mentally retarded, the homeless, abused women and children, and helping needy pregnant women in delivering and caring for their infants. The Foundation ordinarily will make grants to shelters and transitional housing, but not for permanent housing.

The grantmaker has identified the following area(s) of interest:

Margaret Abell Powell Fund

The fund was created to support theater and ballet in the Washington, DC, metropolitan area (including the counties of Montgomery, Prince George's Charles, Calvert, St. Mary's and Arlington, and the city of Alexandria, VA). Support will be given to local organizations producing English language, mainstream theater and classical ballet. Emphasis will be given to organizations which support specific performances, the staging or choreography of pieces, and the training of young artists. Applications for this program will be accepted for: 1) the underwriting of specific performances, 2) the training of actors, actresses, performers and dancers, and 3) the staging and choreography of specific pieces. M.A.P.F. proposals are reviewed only in June and Dec. Deadlines are Apr. 15 and Oct. 15.

Application Information

Proposal guidelines and Abortion Counseling Disclosure form available on foundation Web site.
Application form not required.
Applicants should submit the following:

  1. Copy of IRS Determination Letter
  2. Copy of most recent annual report/audited financial statement/990
  3. Listing of board of directors, trustees, officers and other key people and their affiliations
  4. Detailed description of project and amount of funding requested
  5. Copy of current year's organizational budget and/or project budget

Board meeting date(s): Mar., June, Sept., and Dec.
Deadline(s): Jan. 15, Apr. 15, July 15, and Oct. 15
Final notification: 2 weeks after board meeting
